New Collection Additions: April/May 2020

I am very happy to say that New Zealand is out the other side of its lockdown, and now we are level 1 almost everything is back to normal. Things that aren't are international travel and postage so it has taken some time for models to reach me. Nonetheless 14 models did make it through in the past two months, many of which have already received detailed reviews.

There is a dearth of coverage in 1:400 scale of the 1940s and 1950s, partly because the models are small in 1:400, older collectors have gravitated to 1:200 and also because the modern collector only seems to care about A350s and 787s. That's a real shame but doesn't mean there is no hope for more DC-4s. Of course, the one hope remaining is Aeroclassics.

Prop releases in 1:400 are rare nowadays but there are still some large holes in the fleet despite Aeroclassics' best efforts. The original Super Connie for example has barely been touched and like the early jet 707s is a major missing space in a seminal period of aviation history.

March was the month level 4 lockdown began for New Zealand and there was further dislocation to the manufacturing of 1:400 scale, with most companies delaying new releases. Even so there are always older models to acquire and with my job holding on for the timebeing I was able to take advantage of some nice Aeroclassics sales.

Big Changes @ Aeroclassics

I haven't always seen eye to eye with Aeroclassics, and its mercurial owner Andrew, but they remain far and away the largest element of my collection - 1134 models to date, which is over 55%. I love their models and nobody, not even NG, produces the range of unusual retro-models that they do. I was concerned last week when I heard of changes in the way their models are distributed, but I am hoping that the changes just announced will secure the future of this bastion of 1:400. Welcome Aeroclassics Direct!

January seems like a long time ago now, with the Coronavirus outbreak delaying the shipment of February’s models and causing suspensions to at least some manufacturer’s production into March. It was however a fairly standard month of purchases for my collection with a focus on my favourite pair of 1:400 manufacturers.

Diesel Nine Desires: A DC-9-30 Wishlist

In recent months the DC-9 has been back in the release schedule for Aeroclassics with some lovely exotic models, like Air Aruba, and some classic mainline treats, like TWA. Although the type has been well represented in 1:400 there are still easily over 50 that I'd like to see on the Aeroclassics mould.

The end of the year saw a wide range of excellent releases and December had 14 of them joining my collection from 5 different manufacturers. With that many models it is little surprise that they weren't all great successes but still overall it was another good month for me.

Trijet Reborn: A 727-100 Wishlist

There are few civil airliners with the importance of the 727 and it quickly became the mainstay of the world's airline fleets through the 1970s and well into the 1980s. There were 572 727-100s built and the type has had some interest in 1:400 scale, with over 190 models made, but there have been none since 2014. This sorry situation leaves a good number of models unmade, several of which are really important historically.

Dabbling in the Dark Side: A Big Nugget 727

Focus is one of the keys to collecting, know what you want and get it but don’t dive off down too many rabbit holes. This has always been a problem for me but one that I have been able to accept by expanding any rabbit holes into new warrens (it’s the main reason the collection has gotten so big)! This you can get away with in 1:400 scale, if you have a bit of space, but trying this with 1:200s will get you a divorce and bankruptcy. So I really should stay well away from 1:200 scale but…

Second-hand Additions in 2019

I admit to getting quite a few new models a month, partly as a result of new purchases but also from the second-hand market. Overwhelmingly these come via Waffle Collectibles Collection Sales. Say what you like about Waffle but he gets the stock and ships it out efficiently at great prices. Here's a selection of 11 additions from the past 9 months acquired from the seconds market, mostly from the Waffle man.

Classic A320s: A Wishlist 1987-95

The A320 family is hardly under-represented in 1:400 scale. Even so most manufacturers are fixated on the now and looking back to the service entry of the original A320 is way outside their interest. That’s a shame as there are plenty of cool models that have not been made for A320s from 1987-1995.

Model collecting isn't always a friendly business, but at its heart 1:400 scale has a good community of collectors who are happy to go the extra mile for each other. I have made some great friends in my time collecting. Due to the tyranny of distance I don't get too many models from other collectors but just this week a box arrived from Oz so here I'll look at the contents and how you too can get hold of some rare models from the same source.

Yesterday marked the announcment of the new Aeroclassics and Lockness models and unusually neither came with photos of the actual models. By now though you should now what you are going to get on the whole, although I admit I won't be ordering anything until I see photos.
