The past few days have seen the release of four models that I imagine most people were wondering if they'd ever see. Three feature Cathay aircraft and one All Nippon and although they all probably come from the JC Wings factory none are JC Branded. Two are BigBird 747s announced well over a year ago and two are the elusive Cathay Tristars of almost similar vintage.
It is a minor peculiarity that a model that does not come with its original box is worth a tiny fraction of the price of one that does, even when a lot of 1:400 boxes are very generic and sometimes almost unidentifiable as belonging to a specific model. I certainly have avoided unboxed models myself but given the opportunity to own some rare models at super low prices a recent sale was too good an offer to pass up.
1:400 scale outside of the big 4 is full of shady and enigmatic manufacturers but few have been so mysterious as the reborn BigBird (should we call them BigBird Mk3?). They reappeared out of nowhere in December 2014 with great promise but have failed to deliver very much in the past 3 years. Indeed in 2017 they didn't manage a single release. So who are they and what should they be getting up to?
