Yesterday's Airlines - Terminal One |
|
Updated: January 2024
I moved back to the UK on New Years Eve 2021 and since then I've setup Yesterday's Airlines at the new house. Unlike the previous house in New Zealand the new place doesn't have a 3 car garage and even if it did the weather here isn't as friendly as Auckland's. So when we got the new place I made sure I bagsied a couple of bedrooms for Yesterday's Airlines. I can tell you the removals guys weren't thrilled about having to carry all the glass display cabinets upstairs - but they did! Terminal One doubles as my home office and as well as being the primary workspace for Yesterday's Airlines it also contains over half the collection. What it doesn't contain is anything from the USA or Canada, but if it is from the rest of the world it can be found in Terminal One.
This room also provides storage for all my avbooks and magazines.
The space has been through a few variations already but I've just spent the day remodelling part of it. The focus was on making it feel a little more spacious, providing some extra storage and obviously providing a little more room and better viewing for the fleet too.

As you walk in and turn right along the side wall are the 4 desktop cabinets I had in NZ (all ex-Dick Smith's shopstock) but now with additional perspex boxes atop them. Along the far wall are two more of these, on top of each other, plus a further 2 cabinets.
To the left is my office space and the area that has just been modified. With the help of some Ikea Kallax units I've been able to raise up the display case containing the Oceania collection and also create a new space for photography.
The Oceania fleet is organised top to bottom as:
1: Pacific Islands and non-Air New Zealand kiwis
2. Air New Zealand
3. TAA / Australian Airlines & Ansett
4/5. Qantas

The long wall cabinets all sit on Ikea Kallax units with glass inserts in their upper levels. In this shot we have:

That just leaves the far wall cabinets for the Chinese collection. The Ikea Detolf on the left has CAAC and the smaller original operators (China Northern, China Northwest, China Xinjiang, China Yunnan). The middle cabinet has Cathay and Dragonair on the top 3 shelves then Juneyao, Shanghai, Sichuan, Xiamen, Shenzhen and cargo airlines. On the right it's the big boys - Air China, China Eastern & China Southern in the top cabinet. Beneath them are the Hainan Airlines group carriers and private airlines.

The trunk contains most, but not all, of my old Schabak 1:600 scale collection. I'd need another room to display them but the wife won't let me :)
