The A330 has surely transcended any sales projections Airbus realistically had for the type and has been the number one reason Airbus has had success in the widebody market since the mid-90s. It has now got a worthy partner in the A350, but still the A330NEO will mean production continues for years. Because of this success it is also a critical model in 1/400 scale for all the manufacturers and the modern moulds all have strengths and weaknesses.
Over the past two years Panda models has risen to increasing prominence on the 1/400 scene and this has been partly fuelled by their relationship with Skywings, who have released over 40 models using Panda's moulds but their own branding. Skywings look to be driving innovation in the Chinese market and have released the first mobile app for model collectors that I am aware of. Plus they have new releases on the way both modern and classic and a partnership with another 1/400 manufacturer.
Realistic looking backgrounds have always been an issue for my airport models. The terminal area is now 8ft wide, which means I can't pilfer backgrounds from elsewhere easily, plus they have to fit into a depth of field that matches the terminal. Once you have a background then it gets really tricky as you have to print it. After many years of thinking about this I have however finally solved the problem. Here's how...
For many Heathrow has been a nightmare of old cramped terminals, long immigration lines, traffic jams and delays. I expect people think that with the new terminals it's much better. I disagree, nowadays its a shopping mall and the diversity of airlines has shrunk compared to AMS and FRA. Anyway back when I was a kid it was a place of wonder and I'm tempted to recreate a part of that. For that I'll need a fleet though, so what's available?
