Gemini Jets and JC Wings have an excellent Ilyushin IL-86 mould but sadly it has been massively under-utilised with only 9 models made over a three year period from 2009-2011. So it is a relief to see that the mould still exists somewhere in the JC factory. The subject of this release is not surprisingly China Xinjiang Airlines, which has had a Gemini release in 2010. However, it is not a re-release as of such as this new Yu version sports the delivery colours. These are basically the same as the later scheme but with a reversed tail - white base and blue swan. The story of China Xinjiang's IL-86s has actually featured in the avhistory blog before so check out my blogpost from 2019 on that topic: As nice as this release is for collectors of Chinese airliners like myself and as much as I would love to see more IL-86s in 400 scale I wouldn't get your hopes up to much for many more releases, however it is good to know the mould still exists and perhaps this will spur JC into using it a little more frequently than once every 12 years! The model is I believe scheduled for release in July.
