Recently I've been working to get my large Xin Long International Airport layout set back up properly for the first time since I left New Zealand. That has included looking to upgrade it in certain areas, which includes buildings and GSE. The recent discovery of AvGeek Models has made that a lot easier. In this post I take a look at their trucks and vans. Ground service equipment (GSE) is vital for any airport layout but a common problem I find with it is that a) it gets expensive if you want to fill a large layout and b) typically it is the larger GSE, that is less frequent at an airport, that gets the focus from makers. AVGEEK Models is a solution for these issues. Run by Matt, in the UK, AVGEEK has started creating an excellent range of GSE and buildings that, not only, are good quality and easily customisable, but also very affordable. This is the perfect combination for someone like me with a big layout. 3D printing has opened the door in recent years to individuals to try out new things and made the creation of bespoke GSE much easier. There is some amazing quality work out there but the very best is quite expensive. Way too expensive to enable me to fill out an airport layout with 40+ gates. Fortunately AVGEEK Models has an excellent range. I particularly like these articulated trucks. They come in packs of 6 and the cabs can be removed from the trailers. Pricing is £14.95 for 6 on eBay. Delivered blank I added some line detail with a pen. I've also added some stickers to the trailers. Obviously, these are macro photos, which show up every single thing, but I am really happy with the trucks given they are only about £2.50 each. More needed than large trucks for an airport layout are smaller vehicles and AvGeek also produces a nice range of Transit style vans and smaller car sized vans. They can come in various colours but I stuck with white myself. I added a few details using a 0.1 black art pen, slightly cumsily I admit, but these are tiny. I will look at adding some decals to the smaller vans but they are really tiny so it is tough. AVGEEK make a lot of other GSE and also buildings too. I'm really pleased with them and will have a look at some more of their products in later blogs.
